The third RESTORE4Cs Policy Brief, “Fostering Inclusive and Cross-Sectoral Action for Wetlands: Building a Community of Practice Supporting Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Resolution XIV.17“, spotlights the launch and development of a Community of Practice for Wetland Restoration. This initiative, developed within the Horizon Europe project RESTORE4Cs, responds directly to Resolution XIV.17 of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, aiming to accelerate inclusive, cross-sectoral action for the restoration and sustainable management of wetland ecosystems.
Wetlands are among the most valuable ecosystems on the planet, yet they are also some of the most threatened. The newly formed Community of Practice seeks to mobilise stakeholders across sectors and regions to share knowledge, build evidence, and foster collaborative learning. The focus is on unlocking wetlands’ potential for climate action, particularly their capacity to act as carbon sinks or sources, depending on land use and ecological conditions.
By engaging site managers, researchers, policymakers, businesses, and civil society organisations, the Community works to:
- Generate evidence on the climate mitigation potential of various wetland types (coastal wetlands, peatlands, floodplains, and more);
- Promote best practices and encourage their replication across regions;
- Identify shared priorities, challenges, and opportunities for collaboration through a bottom-up, inclusive approach.
This initiative supports European environmental goals, aligning with the EU Nature Restoration Law and the EU Biodiversity Strategy, and facilitates stakeholder engagement linked to national restoration efforts.
The Wetland-based Solutions Portal, launched at Ramsar COP15, serves as a central platform for this Community of Practice. It provides a collaborative space to exchange knowledge, share success stories, and inspire joint action.
