RESTORE4Cs at BIOSPACE25: Advancing Wetland Conservation through Satellite Remote Sensing

RESTORE4Cs will participate in the upcoming BIOSPACE25 Conference, the first international event dedicated to the application of Satellite Remote Sensing (SRS) for biodiversity conservation. Taking place from 10-14 February 2025 in Frascati, Italy, BIOSPACE25 will bring together a global community of experts from various fields, including biodiversity science, conservation, and remote sensing. The conference will provide an exceptional platform for discussing the latest advancements in Earth Observation (EO) technology and its impact on biodiversity research, monitoring, and policy.

Workshop WS 10: Wetland Ecosystems
On 12 February 2025, RESTORE4Cs will be actively participating in Workshop WS 10, which focuses on the pivotal role of satellite-based technologies in wetland ecosystem conservation. Wetlands are among the world’s most vital yet increasingly threatened ecosystems. The workshop will explore how Earth Observation (EO) tools can enhance our understanding of wetland ecosystems, support biodiversity management, and drive wetland restoration efforts. The workshop’s discussions will highlight the integration of high-resolution satellite imagery and advanced analytical techniques to monitor wetland health and biodiversity at large scales.

Key Topics of the Workshop:

  • Session 1: Global conventions and policy instruments for wetland conservation, focusing on the use of EO data to create wetland inventories, map greenhouse gas budgets, and develop tools for the RAMSAR Convention, the Global Biodiversity Framework, National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Session 2: Practical applications of EO and modeling techniques for wetland management, monitoring, and restoration, with real-world case studies and interactive discussions on the scaling of these tools for Europe’s wetlands.

RESTORE4Cs is contributing valuable insights into wetland restoration through its focus on socio-ecological systems and the integration of remote sensing technologies in wetland ecosystems. By leveraging satellite data, the project is helping to optimise wetland management and restoration practices, particularly in regions facing significant environmental change.

Plenary Session: Key Recommendations for Wetland Conservation

The RESTORE4Cs representatives will also play a key role in the plenary session on 14 February 2025, where key recommendations emerging from the workshop will be presented. These recommendations will focus on advancing the use of satellite remote sensing for wetland conservation and restoration, with an emphasis on improving decision-making processes and supporting the implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) at local and regional scales.

As one of the contributing projects in the workshop, RESTORE4Cs will collaborate with other European initiatives such as Interreg Euro-MED Wetland4Change, ESA EO4WI, and Global Wetland Watch to present the outcomes of the discussions and define next steps for the future of wetland monitoring.

BIOSPACE25 offers a unique opportunity for experts and practitioners to discuss how satellite remote sensing can be used to address the accelerating biodiversity crisis, especially in critical ecosystems like wetlands. Through open dialogue, the conference will set the stage for scaling innovative technologies and collaborative efforts to protect wetlands globally.
