RESTORE4Cs at SERE 2024

RESTORE4Cs will participate in the 14th European Conference on Ecological Restoration (SERE 2024), which will be held from August 26th to 30th, 2024, at the Estonian National Museum in Tartu, Estonia.

SERE 2024 is an international conference organised by the European Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER), taking place in Europe every two years (see here). During the last week of August 2024, everyone working on the science, practice, and policy of ecological restoration will come together in Estonia, Tartu, to share knowledge and discuss the future of European nature.

RESTORE4Cs will be present at the conference with a double session it will hold together with its Sister Projects, ALFAwetlands, REWET and WET HORIZONS, on Wetland Restoration. The session will cover the topic 3.1 Restoration of wetlands: Pathways, trafe-off and co-benefits and take place on August 27th from 11:00 to 12:30 and from 14:30 to 16:00 in Room Bridge, on the ground floor of the Estonian National Museum:

“The restoration of wetlands stands as a pivotal element within climate change mitigation strategies. Their multifaceted roles, encompassing carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas regulation, resilience against extreme weather events, and biodiversity support, collectively contribute to fostering a more sustainable and climate-resilient future. Recognising the urgent need to safeguard wetland ecosystems, four EU-funded projects—REWETRESTORE4CsWET HORIZONS, and ALFAwetlands—have forged collaborative partnerships involving over 40 European entities. Together, they are dedicated to the restoration of wetlands and enhancing their medium to long-term mitigation capabilities. In this special session, these 4 EU projects will succinctly outline their initiatives aimed at accelerating wetland restoration encompassing natural wetlands, peatlands, mineral coastal wetlands, and floodplains. The session will also feature concise presentations derived from open abstract submissions, offering diverse insights. Subsequently, an interactive segment will engage the audience to collaboratively devise a roadmap for expediting restoration opportunities and maximising broader impact. This collective endeavour signifies a concerted effort to address the critical challenges faced by wetlands and underscores the importance of collaborative action in securing a resilient and sustainable future”.

The University of Aveiro (project coordinator and WP9 leader) and LifeWatch ERIC (WP8 leader), will be attending the conference in person as representatives of RESTORE4Cs. They will have a joint booth with the ALFAwetlands project at the event. The RESTORE4Cs and ALFAwetlands booth (n°8), will be located on the ground floor of the Estonian National Museum, near gate A and the registration area. You can find more details on the location of the booth on page 63 of the SERE 2024 programme.

Moreover, attendees at SERE 2024 will have two important opportunities to engage with RESTORE4Cs and its Sister Projects at the booth during the conference. On the 27th, they will have a dedicated session to gain insights into Sister Projects and the progress and results achieved so far. On the 28th, there will be a session to delve into RESTORE4Cs and its mission and objectives:

  • Sister Projects Booth Session (with RESTORE4Cs, ALFAwetlands, REWET and WET HORIZONS representatives) | 27 August from 16:30 to 17:00, during the afternoon coffee break;
  • RESTORE4Cs Booth Session (with RESTORE4Cs representatives) | 28 August from 10:00 to 10.30, during the morning coffee break.

The SERE2024 conference in Tartu will serve as an excellent meeting point during this crucial time to develop the most effective approaches for the long-term recovery of nature. It offers an opportunity to foster the reciprocal exchange of ideas, knowledge, and experiences among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from across Europe. The sessions will cover topics ranging from the theory and practice of restoring various ecosystems (wetlands, grasslands, forests, rivers, agroecosystems, urban and marine ecosystems) to the socioeconomic and political contexts of ecological restoration. Special focus will be put on discussions focused on the development of national restoration plans under the new EU law.
